In front of the loud and proud crowd at the Amsterdam Arena at the start of the opening game of Ajax season; the scene was set looking around the stands with the F-Side showing off their white logo t-shirts, and the drums beating out the tunes of the famous songs to get the champions off to a winning start.
We couldn’t have asked for a better start from Van de Wiel, who took a shot from the right hand side at 20 yards and into the top corner of the net. What a goal to start the season off – the fans loved it and I loved watching it on TV with my friend who’s Portuguese – even he couldn’t believe what a fantastic goal it was.
Ajax looked comfortable for the first half and could have been easily satisfied with the score which stood at 1-0.
The second half began and what a change we saw. AZ American forward Jozy Altidore scored two goals in three minutes – he looked dangerous and took his goals well. In my opinion we need a replacement for Jan Vertonghen, to someone with experience, who can help keep the defence solid for a domestic season and Champion’s League champion. Ajax put on the pressure with thir new signing Sana, who came on the pitch and hit the crossbar from a tight angle. Kolbeinn Sigthórsson who signed from AZ last season had a great chance to score but scuffed the ball into the ground to make it an easy save for the AZ keeper.
Theo Janssen came onto the field with rumours it could be his last game (as well as Anita -updates to follow), Janssen played his part in the game with his clever passing around the field to change the play of the game.
With only 10 minutes left until losing 1-2 – a moment of magic from former AZ player Sigthórsson saw him turn in the box to strike the ball into the top right hand corner; the screams from me at the TV and the crowd was wild, we believed there was time to win the game.
A couple of half chances fell to Anita and Janssen but in the 93rd minute the whistle blew and the North Holland Derby finished 2-2 just like last season.
