Toby Alderweireld Appointed New Vice-Captain

Frank de Boer announced the name of his new vice team captain after Vurnon Anita and Theo Janssen left Ajax this summer.

Defender Toby Alderweireld was given the news and the added responsibility on Friday. De Boer commented and said “Toby has been with Ajax a long time and is a vital part of the first team squad, it’s a natural process”.

Alderweireld has been with Ajax since 2004. He spent four years in the youth team, before being promoted to the senior team.

Making 79 appearances for Ajax and scoring 5 goals, in the early stages of his career in the 2009–10 season, Alderweireld established himself in the first team and starting eleven. He became first choice centre-back along with fellow Belgian Jan Vertonghen after the departure of former captain Thomas Vermaelen to Arsenal.

Now he will be forming a new partnership with Niklas Moisander who joined from AZ Alkmaar this summer, starting tonight against NAC Breda.
