Arsenal have emerged as the latest club to be monitoring the Ajax defender, according to Dutch newspaper AD.
The 24-year-old is keen for a move abroad after four seasons as a first-team regular at the Amsterdam club, many clubs have been rumored to be interested but the north London club appear to have emerged as front-runners for his signature.
Regular Gunners right-back Bacary Sagna is still sidelined with a broken leg, and manager Arsene Wenger is thought to be keen to bring in defensive reinforcements.
However, Richard Law, an executive at Arsenal who is responsible for player contracts, was coy when quizzed on whether his side were preparing an offer for the Holland international.
When asked about a move for van der Wiel, Law said: “I cannot confirm or deny. We never make announcements on transfer issues.”
