Sir Alex Ferguson is believed to be intent on signing a central defender this summer, potentially to replace injury-hit Nemanja Vidic if the Serbian leaves Old Traffic.
Manchester United have been linked with Benfica’s Ezequiel Garay, Porto’s Ellaquim Mangala and Brazilian stopper Dede in recent weeks, with doubts also lingering over the long-term fitness of 34-year-old Rio Ferdinand.
However, according to European media group RTL, Ajax star Toby Alderweireld is being watched by Red Devils scouts who believe the Belgium international could be a worthy option at just £10m.

The 24-year-old is expected to follow in the footsteps of his compatriots Thomas Vermaelen and Jan Vertonghen and leave the Eredivisie for the Premier League.
Alderweireld is out of contract in 2014, and could be on the move this summer after outgrowing the Dutch club.
The centre-back has made 38 appearances for club and country this season, and is also on the radar of Tottenham, Liverpool and Newcastle.
